1. Feverfew
Feverfew is great for repelling mosquitoes and other flying insects. An ideal location for planting is around seating areas and close to doorways and windows.
If planted with citronella grass and lavender will make an even better repellent.
In addition to its insect repellent qualities, feverfew also has many medicinal uses.
2. Chrysanthemum
Helps to repel insects and bugs including aphids and ticks. Chrysanthemum is best used as a ‘companion plant’ to protect other plants with its insect repellent properties.
3. Pennyroyal
Pennyroyal helps to repel mosquitos, gnats and also ticks and fleas! It is often used in commercial natural insect repellent creams and sprays. Pennyroyal is great to plant in the garden, but it is best utilized as a topical insect repellent applied to the skin.
4. Lavender
Lavender is most useful for repelling mosquitoes and gnats when planted in the garden. As with feverfew and citronella grass, lavender is best planted in the garden around seated and eating areas and also around windows and doors.
5. Marigolds
Marigolds are best used as a ‘companion plant’ to help protect other plants, but they also have some mosquito repellent properties.
6. Citronella grass
Citronella grass is commonly used as an insect repellent and used in outdoor candles, which are used around outdoor eating and seating areas.
For best results, plant citronella grass in the garden and use in conjunction with feverfew and lavender.
