Essential Oil Safety Information
Our essential oils are highly concentrated liquids that may be harmful if not used correctly.   Oils are used in many different ways including medicines, skin and hair treatments and perfume.

Essential oils should never be used undiluted on the skin.  Follow our simple steps to safely enjoy the many benefits that aromatherapy can offer.

1. Some oils can cause allergic reactions.  Test on a small area of skin before using a new oil.

“What is a skin or patch test?”

A patch test should be carried out before using any new product.  Simply place a little of the essential oil mixed with carrier oil onto the skin of the inner arm.   Check after 24 hours.  If there is no itchiness or adverse reaction then it's fine for you to use.

2. Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy (These include Basil, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Clary sage, Clove, Juniper, Lemongrass, Peppermint and Rosemary) or if you have any health conditions. Be sure to read about any safety precautions associated with the essential oil you want to use.

You can find out more information about our essential oils here "MSDS and Safety Data Sheets"

3. Less is More.  Essential oils are highly concentrated and you may need just one drop.  There’s no need to add more when you don’t need too.
4. Hazardous Essential oils.  Not all essential oils are suitable for use in aromatherapy.  See our List of “Hazardous Oils”
5. Essential oils should not be taken internally.  A consultation with a professional aromatherapist should be made to find out more.
6. Never let children use Essential oils without an adult present who understands how to use them.
7. Keep away from Pets.
8. If any Essential oil spills mop up immediately with paper towels.
9. Do not eat, drink or smoke whilst handling Essential oils.
10. Essential oils are flammable – keep away from naked flames and hazardous areas.
11. Always store in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. Always use original containers. Avoid contact with polished surfaces and plastic.

If in any doubt, consult your physician or qualified aromatherapy practitioner.

Ways to use your Essential Oils

Inhalation: place one to five drops on a hanky, a vaporiser or diffuser, or on a light-bulb ring and enjoy the aroma.

Baths: add 4 to 6 drops of essential oil to one teaspoon (5g) of carrier oil (such as sweet almond or wheatgerm) and add to running bath water.

Massage: add 1 to 5 drops of essential oil to one teaspoon (5g) of carrier oil and massage. Carrier oils include our favourite sweet almond, olive oil, apricot kernel. wheatgerm or avocado. Its always a good idea to warm the oil as this increases absorption and is more enjoyable to the person receiving the massage.

Compress: add 3 to 5 drops of essential oil to 300g of hot or warm water. Soak your flannel in the water and squeeze out excess.  Apply to affected part of the body.

Steam treatments: add 1 to 2 drops of essential oil to a bowl of freshly boiled water. Cover your head with a towel and lean over the water to inhale the steam.

Room Fragrance:  add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil in an oil burner.
